About this course
The purpose of this five-day course is to provide participants with the skills necessary to train and supervise therapists in the use of Behavioural Family Therapy for psychosis, bi-polar disorder and other mental health issues. The course is participative in nature and will provide participants with the opportunity to practice skills and to receive feedback from fellow participants and from the facilitators. Those attending will learn skills for use in straightforward training and supervisory situations, and also how to handle unexpected events and awkward questions.
The training is intensive, with a high tutor to participant ratio (1:5). Through role-play, group exercises and filmed sessions, participants receive thorough and detailed feedback on their performance and areas for development.
Selection criteria
This course is open to those who have completed initial training in Behavioural Family Therapy. Applicants must have a working knowledge of the model as they will be expected to present components of the approach, facilitate role-play groups where people practice using skills from the approach, and give/receive feedback on their skills as part of the training.
If you are not trained in Behavioural Family Therapy and would like to do so, please get in touch with [email protected] to get dates of our next course.

Important note
The Meriden Family Programme is one of four providers across England who are delivering a 10 day Family Intervention and Bipolar Disorder Training Course commissioned by Health Education England (HEE). This is part of a national drive in England to have staff from Mental Health Trusts trained to a national standard proposed and funded by HEE. This 10 day course takes place over 12 months and includes learning from our 5 day BFT course as well as other areas. It also includes supervision, pre-course meetings, induction and additional meetings throughout the year as well as the requirement to submit course work.
The 5-day BFT course that trainers and supervisors have traditionally offered is still currently available for those who cannot commit to the more intensive HEE course and for those based outside of England who are not included in the HEE initiative. Please bear in mind when considering applying for this course that whilst attending the 5-day BFT course will continue to equip attendees to deliver evidence-based family work, it will not meet the new wider National Curriculum standards.
If you have any concerns around this and how this could affect your decision to attend the Training Trainers course, please get in touch with [email protected] who will be happy to discuss this further.
