Feedback on our ‘Behavioural Family Therapy’ Training and Supervision

As a team we regularly deliver training in behavioural family therapy with the option of twelve months of supervision following the training. We have people from all over the UK and beyond attending the courses. In 2024 Noha Mouad Al Haj (Clinical Psychologist) joined the course from the United Arab Emirates. To the best of our knowledge Noha is the first person from UAE to complete training in BFT. Noha has managed to successfully deliver BFT as a single practitioner and has been an inspiration to everyone in her supervision group. Noha writes about her experiences of the training and supervision below:

“Participating in Behavioural Family Therapy training was an enriching and rewarding experience. The training equipped me with practical, evidence-based skills that can be applied to complex family situations, using a simple and reflective framework. These skills helped families improve their communication, practice problem-solving, and work collaboratively.

During my training, I had the opportunity to work with families of service users with different diagnoses, including schizophrenia, oppositional defiant disorder, borderline personality disorder, and adjustment disorder. The model’s structured yet flexible approach helped engage families from a variety of cultural backgrounds, including the UAE, Egypt, and Lebanon, and those living in different emirates. It helped many of them come together in a way that felt new and meaningful.

Supervision played a crucial role throughout the training. My supervisor provided consistent guidance and support, helping us navigate challenges in implementing BFT specific to the region. Some of those challenges included inconsistent family attendance, preferences for individual rather than joint work, complex family dynamics, and difficulties coordinating sessions. The sessions provided a supportive space where we could openly discuss these barriers, and constructive feedback was given. In addition, the supervision sessions were highly collaborative, with every team member encouraged to contribute. I always felt heard and supported, and I learned from the shared insights of others.

BFT’s adaptable structure helped us respond to these challenges by allowing flexibility in how sessions were delivered. This made it easier to meet families where they were in their journey and gradually build toward more cohesive and constructive engagement.

Overall, the training has strengthened my skills as a practitioner, and I feel more confident in working collaboratively with families moving forward.”
