A carer is anyone who looks after a family member, partner or friend who needs help because of issues related to their disability, physical or mental health problem. Carers can include both adult and children, known as ‘young carers’.
Historically, to ‘recover’ has been interpreted as the person being free of symptoms, or being restored to their former level of health. Now, the focus is more about coping with difficulties and experiencing a good quality of life.
Behavioural Family Therapy (BFT) is the model of family work used by the Meriden Programme. It is an evidence-based, psychoeducational approach which involves working with the service user and their family.
